Summary/Abstract: The estate of Maisons-sur-Seine, inherited by René de Longueil in 1629, became one of the most beautiful in France thanks to the construction of a new castle, entrusted to François Mansart. This vast property included several pavilions, stables, moats, and beautifully landscaped gardens. The monumental entrances, ornate iron gates, and decorated retaining walls testified to the elegance and wealth of the estate. The gardens, celebrated by poets, featured long perspectives and refined plantings. René expanded the estate by purchasing adjacent fiefs, creating a vast territory almost surrounding the royal domain of Saint-Germain. He made Maisons-sur-Seine a luxurious residence, hosting the king and the court. The château, richly furnished and adorned with works of art, reflected his taste for tapestries, porcelains, and orange trees. Powerful and influential, René de Longueil made Maisons-sur-Seine a symbol of his status and refinement, passing on an important heritage and the title of marquis to his descendants.
