Summary/Abstract: Guilds, as a form of protection of crafts, appeared in Arad at the beginning of the 18th century and functioned until the second half of the 19th century, when they turned into associations. Maria Theresa standardized the „statutes” of operation of all the guilds in the empire. Francisc I improved them in the early nineteenth century. These statutes established the position of apprentices, journeymen and craftsmen within the guild, the obligations and rights of each of them. Over time, the obligation to comply with the provisions has led to a certain specific way of life.
