Summary/Abstract: In the interwar period, the economy of Năsăud County was an agrarian-industrial one. The main economic branch was agriculture, while industry took a secondary place. There were small and medium production capacities here, mostly concentrated in the town of Bistrița, of great diversity. The activity of the Regia Cooperative “Regna”, established for the exploitation of the forests of the 44 former border communes, illustrates the supremacy of the wood industry to which is added the food industry, footwear and clothing, construction materials, etc. Some of the factories and workshops, whose base of raw materials was mainly local, were equipped with electric motors or machines driven by the hydraulic force of water. Regarding the structure of the capital, there was no Romanian capital in Năsăud County. The industrial capacities were achieved in their vast majority by the ethnic Germans, Jews and Hungarians. Investments in the field in Năsăud County were reduced, because commercial and credit companies were poorly developed. The development of industrial capacities in Bistrița was done with private capital and at a slow pace, depending on the entrepreneurs. The lack of capital available to be invested, the low involvement of the Romanian State and local authorities in stimulating the industry, caused it to develop in the interwar period at a slow and random pace, depending on the initiatives of some private investors, without acquiring a weight significant in the economy of Năsăud County.
