Summary/Abstract: The paper is focused on the changes that occurred in the sphere of the seasonal labour migrations among builders during the construction of the first socialist town in Bulgaria – Dimitrovgrad. The research is based on various sources – archive sources, interviews with town residents, materials from the local and national press, fictional literature. The exposition introduces in brief the development of the region of Dimitrovgrad, the role of the socialist state in terms of regulating population mobility, the indoctrination in “the communist attitude to labour”, the measures took by the state to train and qualify construction workers, social benefits provision. The result is changing “the culture of gurbet”, but not transforming the builders “gurbetchii” of yesterday into “socialist personalities” according to the propaganda.
