Summary/Abstract: The article considers the issues of involving women in industrial labour in the case of Dim¬itrovgrad. The town is designed and built with the idea to be “the first socialist town in Bulgaria”. The heavy industry development in Dimitrovgrad impedes the expansion of the emancipation project. The reason for its failure is not only economic, but it is a result of the complex interaction among many factors – power relations between the two sexes at the workplace, dispositions and attitudes of women towards their place and role in the policy conducted by the socialist state in connection to emancipation of women, social policy, etc. The analysis of the studied processes and phenomena is carried out in parallel to tracing the discrepancy between their official version, maintained by the propaganda, and the reality.
