Summary/Abstract: The mirror stage postulated by Jacques Lacan is structuring for the infant's mental life. The presence of the maternal other, in the role of Big Other, bearer of all signifiers, is an indispensable component of passing through the ordeal of the mirror. Who can step into this position of maternal other and what are the prerequisites for someone who cares for babies in an institution to take it? The reasoning in this text is aimed at finding a connection between the hospitalism described by René Spitz and the difficulties in the mental development of children raised in institutions during the totalitarian society.
