Summary/Abstract: Aim: The aim of our research was to map the perception of stress burden among oncology nurses and to verify the nurses‘ satisfaction with their choice of work in the oncology ward. Participants and methodology: 102 nurses providing nursing care for cancer patients in selected inpatient health care facilities in Slovakia participated in our research. For the purpose of descriptive evaluation we used mathematical and statistical functions of Microsoft Excel 365. In order to detect the statistical significance of the differences in the answers of the respondents in the subgroups formed in terms of the selected classifiers, we used the chi-square test in the case of nominal variables and the Kruskal-Wallis test for ordinal variables. Results: Based on the analysis of the research results, we found that there is a relationship between the decision to change the workplace and the level of stress in the oncology workplace. Nurses who reported the highest level of stress are determined to change the workplace. We further investigated the satisfaction with the oncology workplace. In terms of mean score, nurses with 10 to 15 years of experience are the least satisfied with their evaluation. In the last hypothesis, we tested whether the length of experience of nurses in the oncology department is related to the subjective perception of stress load. The result of the analysis showed that the level of nurses‘ stress load is dependent on the length of experience of oncology nurses. The highest level of burden was found in nurses with length of experience 1-5 years and less than 1 year of experience. Conclusion: Mental stress in oncology nurses while caring for a sick patient may experience anxiety and sadness. Oncology nurse should not submit to stressful situations and work in oncology should not be affected by the demands of the ward. To eliminate the psychological burden of nurses working in the oncology ward, regular rest coupled with relaxation should be used.
