Summary/Abstract: The article is concerned with the biography of Professor Aleksander Kossowski – a lecturer of modern history at the Catholic University of Lublin for many years (1926–1939, 1944–1965) and an archivist at the State Archives in Lublin (1928–1949). As a teacher, he contributed to the upbringing and education of new historians, and as a scientist he is mentioned as an extremely inquisitive researcher. Working as an archivist, he prepared many fonds that today are often used by researchers of the history of the Lublin region, and during the war helped to save numerous German documents. Thanks to this, it is possible to reconstruct the activity of the German administration and the traces of their numerous crimes. When writing the text, archival materials and memories of his students were used, which until now were used only briefly. A thorough analysis of them showed the whole life of the Lublin professor.
