Summary/Abstract: Through his work, Thomas Hobbes has an original contribution to the modern state development. He published the main work, Leviathan (1651), in a turbulent period in England's history. It crossed two civil wars (1642-1646 and 1648), and King Charles I was beheaded (1649). Hobbes decided to react to the violence in the society, concerned about the wickedness of man and the violence in society. He developed a theory that promotes the absolute power of the sovereign. The project proposed by Hobbes, based on the idea of a social contract, is a particularly innovative one.
