Summary/Abstract: The article aims to analyze and evaluate the potential of Wągrowiec as a district centre in the light of the selected categories of the socio-economic development level. The study was conducted by three interrelated and, to a certain extent, overlapping categories which are: the population, economy and labour market. The temporal scope of the study covered the years 2010–2020. The research procedure is composed of four stages. The first presents the situation of Wągrowiec in the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship. The second stage shows the typical socio-economic features of the town. The socio-economic development level of Wągrowiec as compared to selected cities of the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship was determined in the third stage. To this end use was made of a synthetic indicator. In the last phase, final conclusions were formulated and a discussion about cities of similar size was initiated. Wągrowiec as a district centre holds an average position in terms of socio-economic development, which has been proved by the Perkal synthetic indicator value computed in the work. In the years compared, a slight increase in the value of the Perkal synthetic indicator for Wągrowiec was recorded, which reflects the change in the city’s position in the ranking, conditioned by favorable values of some indicators in the economy and labour market categories. In 2010, the city was seventh, and in 2020 – sixth. Along with Wągrowiec, the class with an average level of development in 2010 was represented by: Śrem and Koło, and in 2020: Jarocin and Krotoszyn.
