From the history of the word talent in the Polish language

Summary/Abstract: In the paper the author describes semantic development of the word talent in the polish language. This word was introduced to the Polish language surely through translations of the Bible. The author found the oldest evidence for the existence of talent in the Polish vocabulary in Biblia brzeska (1563). In the Bible talent has the meaning of a big weight or a big monetary unit. These units have never been used in the Polish metrology until now. The meaning of the word talent in the Polish language in chronological order: 1) ‘the treasure entrusted to somebody, the possibilities given to somebody; gift from God’ (from the 2nd half of the 16th century); 2) ‘skills, abilities, positive features’ (from the 1st half of the 17th century until now); 3) ‘a person, who a talent; a talented person’ (from the 1st half of the 19th century until now); 4) ‘the subjects being taught which belong to the field of art’ (in the 2nd half of the 19th century and in the 1st half of the 20th century).
