Antychryst ‘Antichrist’ in Polish dialectal vocabulary and phraseology

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the functioning in Polish dialects of the Biblical lexeme Antychryst (antychryst) ‘Antichrist (antichrist)’ which appears in the texts of the New Testament both as a proper name and an appellative. The adaptation of the word is examined in semantic, word-formational derivation and phrasematic context. It turns out that this borrowing from the Bible has been adapted quite well in Polish dialectal vocabulary and phraseology, as proved by a few, but numerously attested meanings of this proper name which have come about through the process of further appellativization, by four derivatives for which this appellativized anthroponym has become the derivational base, as well as by more than ten phrasematic units (expressions and comparisons) which include the word as an appellative or as a proper noun in their structure. The current paper is another contribution – one whose staring point is a New Testament proper name – to a more exhaustive description of the Biblical heritage in Polish dialects and of the phenomena involved in its adaptation and functioning on different levels of the linguistic description of dialectal varieties of Polish.
