Summary/Abstract: St. Nicolas is the only saint, commemorated both in the Eastern and Western Christianity, distinguished in the latter by rich, complete and developed chant repertory. This repertory leads to certain questions about the time and the way of compilation, whether some part or the full repertory was borrowed from other offices or, on the contrary, was “composed” in memory of St. Nicolas in particular. The presented article is focused on the great responsories for the Matins of St. Nicholas in the Gregorian antiphoner. This is a part of a more detailed research about the chant repertory for St. Nicolas. Previous study on structural matters of this repertory gave a reason to assume that certain responsories were particularly composed for the Office of St. Nicholas. Here, by analysis on the melodic structure of three of these responsories the statement could be affirmed. The investigation also touches the matter of way of compilation and transmission of these chants in a time when the diestematic notation is widespread throughout Western Europe. The present article aims to enrich the picture of that which part of Gregorian chant repertory for St. Nicholas was particularly composed for his office and how it was created.
