Summary/Abstract: The article outlies the life and academic activities of Maria Pawłowiczowa, née Kostecka, who was a citizen of the Eastern Borderlands living in Silesia after the war. She was born in Sokoliki Górskie, and ten reared in Stanisławów, Lwów, Chełm, and Mielec. In 1945 she settled down with her husband in Silesia, first in Bielsko-Biała, then in Katowice. She graduated from the Higher Pedagogical School in Katowice, and continued her academic career in the field of literary studies at the University of Silesia in Katowice. She was employed at the University of Silesia in Katowice: first in the Institute of Polish Philology (the Philological Faculty), and then in the Institute of Library Studies and Scholarly Information. Her research focused on the history of culture, writing, as well as Silesian books and libraries, mostly in the Cieszyn region. After 1989 she additionally concentrated on Eastern Borderlands. Pawłowiczowa is the author of numerous academic and popularising texts devoted both to Silesia and the Eastern Borderlands.
