Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present various positions on the freedom and duties of the artist. The author is interested in discourses on the artist’s freedom coexisting in public circulation. They are formulated by artists, critics, scientists, representatives of the media and the Church, and even lawyers. An exemplification of the discourses on the artist’s freedom discussed in the first part of the article is the public discussion on the controversial performance The Curse (based on Stanisław Wyspiański’s drama), included (since 2017) in the repertoire of the capital’s Teatr Powszechny im. Zygmunta Hübnera, made by the Croatian director Oliver Frljić.
