Summary/Abstract: This study helps teacher to understand standards settings, due to the fact that standards settings, cut scores, performance standards are fairly unknown for the majority of the teachers, because our curriculum does not use them, and gives a description of possible standards settings for the Romanian Language and Literature curriculum (gymnasium level). The first part of the study represents an approach to the concept of standards settings, emphasizing the representative bibliographic resources from the Anglo-Saxon area, thus we focus on defining the concept of standard, on the relationship between competencies and standards, between the subcomponents of competence and performance level descriptions, In the second part, we give examples of performance standards, the way we think they are going to describe best students’ knowledge and achievements.
