Summary/Abstract: Educational exclusion, meaning exclusion and inequality in access to educational services, as well as a lower chance of achieving a high level of educational achievement due to social reasons, can be both a cause and an effect of socio-economic disadvantage. At the same time, educational exclusion plays a key role in reproducing social exclusion, while also representing the key link where, with appropriate social intervention, there is a chance to disrupt the mutually reinforcing negative processes. In this regard, current studies emphasize that social disadvantages do not necessarily turn into school disadvantages: pedagogical factors can be decisive in the academic success of each student. This paper attempts to make a synthesis of the main contemporary sociological concepts relevant for this field. In the first chapter we summarize the main sociological interpretations of social exclusion and family social disadvantage, while in the second chapter we are discussing the link between social and educational disadvantage in the light of contemporary research. In the final chapter we emphasize the main theoretical positions and views concerning the potential ways and key factors for minimizing the negative effects of family social disadvantage on school achievement and promoting the mutually reinforcing positive cycle of educational and social inclusion.
