Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to determine the socio-economic development level of Polish districts. Based on development index (Wr) the development level of districts was described. Data source for 2004 and 2009 was a Local Data Bank prepared by Central Census Bureau. It was found that there was a clear difference in the development level of districts during the analyzed period and among voivodeships. The best structure of districts according to development index in 2009 concerned Śląskie, Małopolskie and Pomorskie voivodeships and the least favourable structure was typical of Podlaskie and Lubelskie voivodeships. In 2009 the value of districts development index for 42.2% districts decreased compared with 2004. For 40.4% of reported districts the rate of development index increased.
