The significance of local action groupsin the formation of social capital in rural areas

Summary/Abstract: The “Leader” programme is a manifestation of a new approach towards rural areas development in the European Union. The significance of this programme comes down to local partnership. As part of local action groups a cooperation of social, economic and public sector is undertaken, using local resources and with the engagement of inhabitants. The main purpose of the “Leader” is building social capital by stimulating the activity of rural areas circles and involving them in the process of building and implementing of local development strategies. The study presents the significance of the “Leader” programmeand its potential advantages for the formation of social capital on rural areas.
