Summary/Abstract: The article is a plea for a new approach to the history of Romanian Jewry. It emphasizes the need for a broader view, without, however, disregarding the merits of the researchers who have so far only dealt with the subject in a sequential manner. Starting from the idea that the Community as an institution plays a crucial role in Jewish life, with all its components: family, education, culture, welfare, religion, the author shows that researchers in Jewish history should not limit their analysis to the interethnic relations with the majority but should also pay attention to internal sources that have been less taken into consideration as yet, such as population census reports, marriage-related documents, various records, etc. which give a particular insight on the Romanian Jewry's life.
