Summary/Abstract: “The Romanian Jewish world at the turn of 19th century provides us the image of a universe swept by changes, haunted by tensions, both internal – within the Jewish society – and external – with the surrounding majority. The numerous testimonies available – be they in the Romanian-Jewish press, true chronicle of the social dynamics of the time, in various archive sources, or in the memoirs of certain personalities, such as Moses Gaster of Adolph Stern – throw interesting lights on that period of deep transformation. Our focus here falls on a particularly important witness of those times: Isaac Astruc. The weight of his testimonies is mainly given by the central position he held in two Jewish international organizations active in Romania at that moment: Alliance Israelite Universelle (AIU) and Jewish Colonization Association (JCA)”[…]
