Summary/Abstract: The article presents a general survey on the concept of "Jewish Studies", considering the Yeshiva as the starting point for the academic study of Judaism but focusing on the Wissenschaft des Judentums as the defining stage in establishing the concept and its rightful place in the European academic world. A special attention is paid to the promoters of the Wissenschaft des Judentums in Romania, of whom Rabbi I. Nimirover is thought to be the most outstanding. Romanian contributions to the Jewish Studies, like Father Athanasie Negoita's research of the Dead Sea Sect and various book collections on Judaica to be found in private libraries, are also well mentioned.
