Summary/Abstract: During the Soviet occupation of Lithuania there was one active seminary in Kaunas, where the faculty of theology was affiliated to, which could offer Bachelor, Master’s, and doctoral studies. It made possible the continuity of teaching theology in that diffi-cult time. Some young men, however, chose studies in the underground seminary, whose existence not only increased the number of priests in Lithuania, but also forced the atheist authority to give more freedom to the official seminary. The underground seminary was cared of by the orders: the Marians and the Jesuits. Lithuania then was in a position of maintaining not only Catholic traditions and official institutions, but also higher education.
