Summary/Abstract: In this presentation are described four paintings by Sava Henţia that are preserved in the plastic arts collection of the National History Museum of Romania and that are dedicated to the Romanian War of Independence (1877-1878). Sava Henţia was one of the five painters who were allowed by the government to accompany the Romanian troops in the campaign against the Ottomans, in order to illustrate the unfolding of the war. Together with his colleagues, he was attached to the Ambulance Service of the General Headquarters of the Romanian army, but unlike them, having been left completely deaf by typhoid fever in 1865, Sava Henţia was unable to actually go on the front. Therefore, his paintings do not depict battle scenes, focusing instead on what was happening behind the frontline.
