Summary/Abstract: The article presents the lexicographic history of the lexeme erudite, which perfectly characterizes the figure of Professor Bogdan Walczak. The dictionary history of other terms referring to a thoroughly educated person, a man of comprehensive knowledge, is also presented. The following terms were described: polyhistor, encyclopaedist and omnibus. Based on their dictionary credentials, the analyzes show the semantic, stylistic and chronological similarities and differences of these four synonyms
