Summary/Abstract: The article presents the topic of alcohol both in terms of its positive and negative role in society. In addition, the historical and cultural conditions of its consumption by people are shown. The main purpose of this publication was to show its negative effects, mainly in the form of alcoholism, which social sciences place among the most common social pathologies. In addition, a systemic way of dealing with this problem at the local level was shown, on the example of the Silesian region, both in terms of counteracting its effects and prevention, mainly through successively increasing social awareness of the threats resulting from its improper use.
