Summary/Abstract: The main goal of this paper is to indicate the places where conducting evaluation research at a university can bring the expected results. Arguments have been presented here in favor of the thesis that in the process of designing, conducting, and communicating research results, not only methodological competences and substantive knowledge about their subject matter are necessary, but also in-depth knowledge of theories developed in many trends of evaluation research. Attention is focused here on the differences between assessment and evaluation and on the specificity that distinguishes evaluation research from applied social research. The paper also includes a comparative analysis of the assumptions adopted within the framework of contemporary trends in the theory and methodology of evaluation.
