Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyse Japanese indirect communication culture focusing on the importance of context. The paper will use the theory of pragmatics to understand differences between direct and indirect communication cultures.Issues discussed will include speech acts, politeness theory and face-saving acts.Verbal and non-verbal language aspects will also be taken into account. The analysis will also take into account historical aspects leading to this type of communication in Japanese culture, and will raise awareness regarding communication related to business culture and consequences of misunderstandings at this level if one of the businessmen is part of a direct communication culture.
