On utilising virtual classroom in preparing students for pedagogical practice

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the issue of preparing teacher trainees for their field experience. It explores the possibilities for utilising virtual classroom when simulating pedagogical communication between teacher and students before the start of the students’ own teaching practicum. The aim of the study is to collect and analyse students’ views on the virtual classroom, to capture their experiences, and to draw conclusions useful for further development of the virtual classroom simulator. The data collected from both initial questionnaire and questionnaire after completion of their training in the virtual classroom environment were compared. Closed, semi-open and open-ended questions were devised for the students to provide reasons for their answers and other clarifying observations. Immersion, i.e. being drawn into the environment that intensifies the experience and brings it closer to reality, is considered an important aspect of the virtual classroom by the students. The number of students involved in the survey (17) was not sufficient to generalize the results. However, the conclusions obtained from the research are useful for the developers to further improve the simulator. These conclusions can also encourage students and teachers of methodology who contemplate inclusion of the virtual classroom in the undergraduate teacher training.
