Summary/Abstract: Starting from the premise that the disappearance of military threats at the end of the 20th century did not necessarily mean an increased level of security for the citizens of the states, and non-conventional security challenges still cause as many or maybe even more human losses than any traditional threat/armed violence would pose to national security, this article will address human security in the context of 21st century insecurities. The proposed objectives are: examining the concept of human security from the perspective of non-traditional and critical security studies, as well as the 1994 UNDP Report that reflects the concept’s normative character; analysing how states and international bodies have approached human security and the measures they have taken to prevent insecurities and protect individuals; and finally it will offer some conclusions regarding the theoretical and practical future of the concept of “human security” in the current security environment of the 21st century.
