Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the metaphorical language Antoni Kępiński employs to describethe depression worldview. Thus far, scholars have devoted little attention to thelinguistic form of Kępiński’s works, whose Melancholia is considered a work of highcognitive and literary value. The article demonstrates how Kępiński constructs hisdepiction of the world of depression through a series of elaborate analogies, shaped bytwo fundamental metaphors of sadness. An analysis of these constructions from theperspective of cognitive metaphor theory reveals how – through metaphorical structures– Kępiński opens to readers an intertextual space of works that universalize experiencesand perceptions that psychiatry positions in the domain of pathology. Moreover, theanalysis illustrates how metaphors connect different planes of perceiving reality, imbuingdiscourse with coherence.
