Identity elements of the Romanian village: building materials and techniques

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the results of research on the typologies, materials and working techniques of rural constructions in the Subcarpathian area of Romania. The position of the dwelling in relation to the street, the typology of the houses, the position of the main facade in relation to the cardinal points and the street, the structure, materials and techniques for the construction of the foundation, walls, ceiling and roof, are powerful socio-cultural and identity indicators that allow for the analysis of the evolution of the peasant household over a period of approx. 200 years and in a socio-historical and economic context subject to frequent and even brutal changes.
