Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to examine Eugeniusz Śmiarowski’s speeches entitled Mowy obrończe (1920–1925) which were published in 1926. They are related to judicial discourse. Maria Wojtak’s methodology is applied in the research in relation to the notion of genre pattern and its four interdependent constituents. The findings indicate that a defence speech (as a sub-genre of judicial speech) is a type of rhetoric speech intended to persuade. The texts under investigation are based on both normative and customary patterns. The communication situation is formal and so is the relationship between the sender and the receiver. In terms of their composition, the speeches are coherent, relevant, full of eristic devices, and phrases from various registers.
