‘There was a battle turned into a massacre’ The second stage of Polish-German fights for Uniejów during the Polish 10 September 1939 campaign

Summary/Abstract: This aticle provides a description of the fights between the troops of the Podolia Cavalry Brigade of the Army “Poznań” and the 221 Infantry Division of Wermacht 8 Army on the night of 9/10 September and most of 10 September 1939. This battle was the second phase of the fights for Uniejów during this campaign and was connected with the biggest Polish counterattack undertaken at that time, known as “the battle of the Bzura”. This text presents the results of the research coducted by the authors on the fights that took place in September 1939 in the area of today’s Turek and Poddębice poviats. Earlier findings of the reseach have already been published in “Biuletyn Uniejowski”. Analysis of the second stage of the fighting is difficult because no archival material concerning this campaign has been preserved, so the authors have to rely on scanty existing relations, primarily the account of captain Andrzej Hlawaty, head of staff of the Podolia Cavalry Brigade, published after the war.
