Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the nature and existence of the work of art in the light of the contributions of Heidegger, his followers, and critics. The axis of Heidegger’s thinking is Being and a being in the openness of Being. The only way to unlock the mystery of being is through an existential attempt to break through into the light of Being and to appear in its gleam, notice what is revealed and help reveal it. One of the ways for Being to speak is art. The conditions of possibility for existence – birth, life, and death – of creativity and work of art are also conditions of possibility for an authentic being – encountering oneself, another, and reality – of a human. Art is a necessity for a human of Being. Decadence of art is an expression of a world of “oblivion of Being” when no place is left for a work of art as a phenomenon of Being.
