The Past and Present of Mardin’s Music from Traditional to Globalization

Summary/Abstract: This study aims to make various determinations pertaining to the past and present of the music culture by addressing Mardin’s traditional music structure and draw attention to the effects of globalization. The main questions in this study include determining the views on the effects of traditionalism and globalization in Mardin’s music culture and examine traditional structural elements of Mardin’s music culture of Mardin along with the effect of globalization. In the study, an examination of the existing literature pertaining to Mardin’s music was conducted, and the interview technique, a qualitative research method, was employed. The sample for this study consisted of 18 participants. The semi-structured interview form consisted of eight open-ended questions prepared by the researchers and content analysis was conducted to analyze the data. Findings suggest that there are considerable influences from Arab, Kurdish, Turkish and Syriac cultures on Mardin’s music culture and lullabies, as the names of and the folk songs reflect this diversity. It was seen that religious music had a special place in Mardin’s traditional music structure and music culture. People from different religions tend to include music in their beliefs in religious ceremonies. The research revealed that familiarity with figures from the Arab art world via radio and television in the past had a significant impact on the musical preferences of the first group of participants, whereas the second group of participants, who represented a younger demographic, developed a distinct musical taste under the influence of media and technological tools. An examination of the current state of Mardin’s music shows that some of its traditions are on the verge of extinction due to the effects of globalization.
