Summary/Abstract: On October 8-9, 2009, State Pskov S. M. Kirov University (Russian federation) hosted the international conference “Russia and Europe in 1939: the USSR – Germany non-aggression treaty – was it a forced compromise or a long-term strategy? Scientists from Poland, Latvia and Belarus participated in the conference, among them prof. Liudas Truska and prof. Juozas Skirius from Vilnius Pedagogical University, Lithuania. Most of the presentations concentrated on the Molotov – Ribbentrop pact and its consequences. Prof. L. Truska reviewed the relationships between Lithuania and Soviet Russia in 1919 - 1939, emphasizing their friendly character. Prof. J. Skirius focused on the Bolshevik foreign policy which aimed to incorporate into the USSR territories which Russia had lost after the First World War. Conference participants visited the old Pskov Kremlin. All conference presentations will be published.
