Summary/Abstract: The article contains an analysis of acoustic characteristics (the duration of the explosive phase, the range and the duration of the parts of the spectrum with the minimai intensity, the localisation ofthe maximal power, the ratio of summary energy in the range of 1000-2000 Hz and 2000-3000 Hz in the spectrum of a consonant) ofthe Lithuanian hard stops [t], [d], [p], [b], [k], [g] and of their soft pairs combined withthe vowels [r], [ę/], [i], [e], [er], [a], [o*], [u], [u-]. The acoustic characteristics of velarisation are not always expressed in the spectrum of the hard consonants. The acoustic features of palatalisation in the spectrum ofthe soft consonants depend either on the consonant or on the quality of the preceding vowel. Palatalisation is the most common phenomenon for the back consonants [k'], [g']. The acoustic features ofthe palatalisation ofthe soft [t'], [d'], [p'], [b'] depend on the quality ofthe preceding vowel and are mostly expressed in the syllables with [ir], less frequently - in the syllables with [e].
