Summary/Abstract: Diphthongalization, i.e. the increase in frequency of the second formant at the beginning of the vowel phonation from the lower position to the higher one at the acoustic level, distinguishes the vowel [ы] from the rest of the Russian vowels. The absence of the vowel [ы] in the vocal system of the Lithuanian language makes it possible to assume that there are some peculiarities in its actualization in the speech of Lithuanians who study the Russian language. The present article deals with acoustic parameters (the initial frequency of the second formant, the frequency of the second formant at the stationary site, the size and duration of the overfall of the second formant) of the transitional site of the stressed vowel [ы] in the pronunciation of Lithuanians. According to the received data, in most the cases Lithuanians reserve the diphthongalization of [ы]. Though in the position after the labial [f] and in some words after the consonants [š], [n] the initial phase of [ы] represents itself as the zero overfall of the second formant frequency. In the Russian speech of Lithuanians, the initial phase of [ы] is different in speed and size as it changes the second formant frequency after the labial [p], [b], [v], [m] and the front tongue consonants [t], [s]. The FII frequency goes up very rapidly and considerably while after other consonants the process is the reverse. On the whole, the pronunciation of [ы] by Lithuanians is characterized by the lower initial quantity of the second formant frequency compared with the standard [ы].
