Summary/Abstract: The article aims at presenting opportunities for the development of the literary-aesthetic competence of students in the process of learning a foreign language. Working with literary texts contributes to this. In this connection, an explanation of the concepts “literary text”, “text reception”, “perception of the foreign/foreignness”, “reading as competence” is sought. The main learning goals are named, the realization of which leads to the mastery of literary-aesthetic competence. Offering narrative texts in foreign language learning gives a reason for an opportunity to connect literature and culture and thus promote intercultural learning, change of perspective, empathy for other culturally determined behavioral patterns, adoption of other values and rethinking of one's own.
