Research on the development of private health insurance – methodological studies

Summary/Abstract: Private health insurance in Poland is deemed to be a potential driving force for the devel- opment of the whole insurance market. Such a statement means that also private health insurance itself will be subject to development. The paper contains reconstruction of the term „development”. Then an attempt has been made to identify the consequences which the meaning ascribed to this term brings upon any empirical research in the area of private health insurance development. It has been established that any research on the develop- ment of private health insurance should be preceded by at least: (1) definition of the research subject (private health insurance understood as one of the following? – institution, product in abstracto, an offer or a market?), (2) determining the time and space horizon of the research, (3) indication of a model situation (desired direction) as a point of reference for descriptions and an eventual assessment of the state of development of the research subject. Additionally, making „development” a theoretical term necessitates definition of indicators (as meant by social sciences not the quantitative ones) that would serve as a basis for giving any opinions thereof.
