Summary/Abstract: The story that follows is about a maritime canal, a little smaller, but which is as beautiful and captivating as the ones about the canals built in 1869 and 1914, Suez and Panama. The Kiel Canal is used by about the same number of ships as the Panama and Suez Canals combined but handles significantly less cargo tonnage. It is the most conclusive example of using everything that was new in the technological field, at the end of the 19th century, for the creation of a new maritime route, which was meant to present the economic momentum of the new German state and the image of a new world power.
