Summary/Abstract: If during the period of sailing ships we witness a simple classification by types of ships, between 1887-1914 things were totally different. The present work tries to shed some light on the extraordinary diversity of battleships of that period, some of which had an ephemeral existence, the torpedo cruiser for example. Even if the basic elements in the classification systems of the period, because there were several, the British model taking precedence, the firepower, armor and speed of any ship remain relevant, we will note that naval doctrines had their role, with a pendulum between cruiser and battleship as a capital ship.Relying on works published up to 1914 as sources, I sought to highlight the difficulty of achieving such a classification system by the fleets of the time and that everything began to be simpler and clearer after the appearance of the Dreadnought type ship, in 1906.
