Summary/Abstract: In 2023, the ongoing tragedy in Ukraine continued, and the National Museum of the Holodomor Genocide aimed to explain the war through the "lack of proper assessment of the communist regime and ideology, both in Russia and worldwide." The year also witnessed the exoneration of Gheorghe Ursu's tormentors, using a disturbing argument that after 1965, the Romanian state's policy was not one of repression against opposition to the political regime and its leaders through violence. In light of these examples, attention is given to individuals who have recognized that respecting the memory of victims and condemning totalitarian regimes are essential for upholding human rights in the post-communist world. The focus is on Timișoara, a city that bravely confronted the repressive forces of dictatorship and expressed a clear aspiration for the respect of people and communities, especially through the efforts of activists Alexandra Mihalcea and Florian Mihalcea. They receive the New Human Rights Magazine Prize for their unwavering dedication to the importance of memory and its role in building a society of decency and freedom.
