Summary/Abstract: "The Beauty Queen of Leenane (1998) is the debut play of Martin McDonagh, of Irish origin but born and brought up in London. He belongs to the “new breed of angry young men” who started to write in the nineties and revolutionized the English stage, both in its subject matter and form. The play was first presented at the Town Hall Theatre, Galway (Ireland) on February 1, 1996, as a Druid Theatre Company/Royal Court co-production, and subsequently opened at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs, London, on March 5, 1996. It then successfully toured Ireland before returning to London to the Duke of York’s Theatre in December 1996. It won three major awards and met with box-office success and critical acclaim all over the world. "[...]
