Summary/Abstract: This paper studies the emotional sterility in the characters’ lives in Ravenhill’s Shopping and Fucking and Some Explicit Polaroids. The plays portray mainly a world of homosexuality, where women are not needed sexually, but where their presence is required to nourish the morally and physically disaffected male figures. Thus women assume the role of substitute mothers to give “these boys” parental guidance and affection, to the detriment of their own happiness.
