Summary/Abstract: Today, the „greening” of different disciplines is a growing phenomenon, which means that environmental issues and our relationship with nature are increasingly becoming part of different fi elds, with media studies and film theory being no exception. My doctoral thesis addresses the depiction of nature and animals in feature-length Hungarian animated films. The current study analyses the natural elements and the representation of animals in the 1973 animated film Johnny Corncob (original title: János vitéz, directed by Marcell Jankovics), which was the first full-length Hungarian animated film, and it celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. In addition to the animated film, the analysis will also mention the differences and similarities with its base material, the narrative poem John the Valiant (original title: János vitéz ), and the cartoon’s place in the work of its director Marcell Jankovics.
