Summary/Abstract: The object of research are the exhibitions held in the 1950s at Sofia’s galleries. Some of the critical responses of the period to the expositions are examined and an attempt is made to outline the general picture of artistic life in the country as well as its transformations. The activities of the Union of Bulgarian Artists (UBA) during the 1950s, have been traced, when the leading principle in art is socialist realism, and cultural policy is developed according to the Soviet model and is determined by the program documents of the Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP).
