Summary/Abstract: The term composition (synthesis, compositio) was used in the Christological dogma. It considers the union between the hypostasis of the Son of God and the human nature in the person of Christ. It was first used before the Fourth Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon. Its proponents were Origen, the Greek priest Malchion, and St. Cyril of Alexandria. The expression was also used by heretics: Aryans, Paul of Samosata and Severus of Antioch and was contradicted by many Byzantine theologians, including Scythian monks.
