Summary/Abstract: Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs can be used in re-education of people being held in prison. Once the primary needs are fulfilled, the re-education system in prisons - or in other forms of custody - must identify and satisfy the higher needs of the individuals in order to bring them back closer to the values of a civilized and democratic society. Religion can be the mean to attend to the higher, three elements in the hierarchy of human needs: love and belonging, self-esteem and self-actualization. However, preaching and applying religious teachings on a random, non-regulated basis can lead to radicalization, extremism and hate.
